Best Red Dot For AK 47

If you’re like us, you love your Kalashnikova. It’s a workhorse that just keeps going and going. Though it may not have the accuracy of some of your other rifles, you’re easily able to ring steel at 100 yards. Those iron sights are fine for shorter distances, but if you’re looking for a little more precision and faster target acquisition, you might be considering a red dot sight. So, what is the best red dot for AK 47’s? Let’s dig in.

What we looked for in an AK Red Dot

Considering how tough the AK is as a whole, our first thought was durability. You might not baby your AK, so you want a red dot that will hold up over time. A lot of the budget red dots just aren’t made with durability in mind. Whether it’s the construction of the housing or light itself, you can’t expect a $30 red dot to last very long… or even hold zero for that matter.

Ability to hold zero

Speaking of holding zero, this was another important factor in choosing the best red dot for AK 47’s. The last thing you want is to have to re-zero your red dot after every range trip. This is an automatic disqualifier for us. A good red dot should be able to maintain POA/POI after hundreds, and even thousands, of rounds. The 7.62×39 round is no .22, so you want an AK optic that can hold zero.

Battery life

One of the most important things when it comes to selecting the right red dot for you is the battery life. This is especially true when it comes to those who choose to keep their optics on, ready to go in case of a self-defense situation. While many red dots have auto-on/auto-off features, some do not and it’s important to have an optic with decent battery life. Many on the market today tout 30k, 40k… even 50k hour battery lives.

Sometimes, the most expensive red dot isn’t always the best option for you. There are many factors in play. For instance, most of us aren’t going to war with our firearms and optics and just need something for casual range time. We always provide several quality red dot options across multiple price points. The truth is, you can’t go wrong with any of our reviewed products… it’s just a matter of your unique application and what works best for you.

3 Best Red Dots for AK's

1. Holosun HS403C [Great red dot at a great price]

The Holosun HS403C is a fantastic red dot for your AK. Not only is it packed with features, but it has proven reliability and durability. This is by far one of the best options in its price range. Holosun is known for making quality red dots with long battery lives. Couple that with the high-strength aluminum housing and you’ve got yourself a real winner.

One huge benefit to this red dot is that its primary power source is solar. This means that you’re only using the battery at night or in low-light situations, thus extending the overall battery life. Another battery-saving bonus is the auto-off feature, which turns the sight off after 8 hours.

One important note is that the high rise mount that comes installed will probably not be the best fit for the AK-47 platform. You’re probably better off going with the low mount, which is provided. As for co-witness, this will be determined by where you are mounting it (side rail mount or gas tube mount) and the height of the mount.

Holosun HS403C Dot 20mm Micro Reflex Sight w/Solar Failsafe HS403C
  • Solar powered (primary daytime power source)
  • 50,000+ hours of battery life
  • 2 MOA dot size
  • 100% waterproof
  • 2 night vision settings
  • Parallax-free, unlimited eye relief
  • 2. Aimpoint Pro [Money's no issue]

If you have a little extra money to spend and are looking for one of the best red dots for your AK, then we highly recommend the Aimpoint Pro. This thing is rugged and built to withstand harsh conditions. If you’re just planning to use it for indoor range use, then this might be a bit overkill. However, if you like to take your firearms out and get them a little dirty, this might be right up your alley.

One big selling point, in addition to the overall quality and durability of this optic, is its QRP2 mount. The mount allows you to quickly detach and re-attach the optic with a 3-click tightening knob, giving you the perfect zero every time.

The Aimpoint Pro comes with a removable spacer, although achieving a 1/3 co-witness is unlikely with AK iron sights. This is because most red dots just sit too high on the AK platform. That’s where the Quick Release mount comes in handy. If your optics were to ever stop functioning, simply remove it to get your iron sight picture back.

Aimpoint PRO Red Dot Reflex Sight with QRP2 Mount and Spacer - 2 MOA - 12841
  • QRP2 quick-release mount
  • 30,000+ hours of battery life (up to 3 years constant-on)
  • 2 MOA dot size
  • Waterproof up to 150 ft.
  • 4 night vision settings / 6 daylight settings
  • Parallax-free
  • Front/Rear lens covers
  • 3. Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 [Rent's due tomorrow]

Don’t be fooled by the price on this red dot (it’s amazing, by the way), the Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 is built to last with quality exterior housing. If you’re looking for a good red dot at a steal, this one is seriously worth considering. While this might not be suited for going to battle, it’s a great option for moderate indoor and outdoor range use.

The Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 is known for it’s shockproof, waterproof and fog proof housing, making it an outstanding red dot sight for all weather conditions. While the battery life may not stand up to some of its competitors, you’re sure to get many hours of use between changes.

The optic sits low, as no riser is included. This is ok, however, as a riser would put you well over any chance of a co-witness. The Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 would be a great option for either a side rail mount or a gas tube mount.

Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 Red Dot Sight Riflescope, 1x20mm, Black
  • Shockproof (great for rifles/shotguns)
  • Fog-proof (won't fog up under humid conditions or temperature changes)
  • 100% waterproof
  • 3 MOA dot size
  • 11 brightness settings
  • Unlimited eye relief
  • Best AK Red Dot Mount

As mentioned throughout this article, finding the perfect red dot for your AK rifle is important, but how you mount it will determine the optic’s true effectiveness. While there are options out there to mount your red dot to the gas tube, or even the dust cover, we’ve found side-mounting to be the best option as far as stability and aesthetics go. Assuming your rifle is set up with a built-in receiver rail, a side mount with 1913 rail will open up endless possibilities when it comes to optics.

So, let’s dive into our favorite side mounts for the AK-47.

Midwest Industries - AK Side Railed Scope Mount

We’re a fan of Midwest Industries products. Their name is synonymous with quality and Midwest’s AK optic mount is no exception. This mount is constructed from hard-coat anodized 6061 aluminum, making it built to withstand regular use and harsh conditions. It offers a QD system that will lock it in place, ensuring your red dot maintains zero every time you remove and replace it. This mount will give you a sturdy, low-profile solution to mounting a red dot on your AK.

RS Regulate - AK Side Railed Scope Mount

RS Regulate is well-known when it comes to AK-47 accessories. They produce extremely high-quality products and one of the best AK side mounts on the market. One thing in particular that we love about RS Regulate’s side mounts, is the options available. They offer side mounts for AKM-style rifles, as well as Yugo and Century Arms. In addition, RS Regulate offers front-biased, rear-biased, and full-length options for most platforms. Yes, the price tag is a little higher compared to Midwest Industries, but it’s still competitive and totally justifiable in our opinion. Check the selection out at their website

At the end of the day, you really can’t go wrong with any of the red dot choices above. We firmly believe that, when selecting the best red dot for your AK, you’d be more than happy with any of these options. It really comes down to your budget and specific needs. All of these have been proven to hold up and hold zero. We’d love to hear about your experience with these optics or any others that you’ve found to be a great product.
